I have downloaded movie clips from an Internet entertainment site. The
webmaster of the site insists they are in .wmv format. Yet when I boot up
Windows Media Player for Mac (latest version) and try to open them, either on
my hard disk, or using the URL search, I get an invalid format error message

It might be because the codecs used to create them are not supported on
WMP9... The Mac version only supports a limited set of codecs and will
also choke if the file uses DRM7.
You can still try opening the file in VLC or MPlayer X. These apps might
be able to play some of the unsupported formats.

Thanks Corentin, for that info
As far as Codecs, the movie's originator says they're Divx codec, maybe
that's not supported.
As far as other movie players that would work, I was using VLC successfully
when the movie-maker was posting his movies in AVI format. Then he switched
to .wmv (claiming better compression ratio), and now VLC will not open them,
which is what made me try WMV for Mac. Since that won't work either, I'll be
looking for a player that will. You mentioned MPlayer X, which I haven't
heard of, but will find and try. Do you know of any other players that might
work?
It's certainly a shame there's so many complicated formats to play a simple
movie. I sure wish there was just one or two universal formats/players out
there. Sheesh!

That's QUITE different. You mean DivX in wmv containers ?? Ouch... that
won;t play in WMP.

Weird... I thought most fo the compression ration was acheived through
the codec itself (which remains the same in this case).
If he/she wants good compression ration, I would suggest H264...

I don;t see any player that would play these files. You could try
MPlayer X but it should be the samedb as VLC.
You could try to transcode the file to another format through an app
like D-Vision or FFMpegX. They sometimes manage to convert formats that
noa player on the Mac can read.

It sure won't - but I found a fairly easy workaround to open Divx/wmv
files with regular QuickTime: just rename your files to end with suffix
..avi and then run them through the donationware utility
DivXWMAConverter.

<http://www.carrafix.com/DivXWMAConverter/>

This method works for me about 95% of the time and produces new .avi
files with audio converted to mp3 format.
