UDP Ports question |
|
|
I am running Windows Media Server on a server that also has IIS
installed. I know that you can stream via MMS which uses UDP or HTTP
which uses TCP. I am a complete novice with Windows 2003, but my
investigations have led me to believe that as I only have 1 IP address
and one network card, my only option is to stream using UDP as TCP
will use port 80 which will conflict with IIS.
However I have not been able to find a decent answer anywhere to a
couple of questions.
1. If using MMS the documentation says you must open UDP ports
1024-5000 (as many as needed). First of all, how do I know how many
ports I need to open? I have read articles which say you must open
them all. If this is the case, could someone explain how to open a
large range of ports like this as going through the standard Windows
2003 firewall settings, I can only open 1 port at a time, so opening
several thousand is not feasible. N.B. I have opened a handful of UDP
ports, namely 1024,1025,1026 and I can get the server streaming
without any problems, but am I right in thinking that if were to have
a large number of connections this may cause problems with this
configuration?
2. If there is no way round the UDP port issue, I may need to obtain
an extra IP address so that I can use HTTP streaming. What are the
advantages and disadvantages of HTTP streaming over MMS? Would
streaming with HTTP present any serious issues?
TIA
