I have a website where I want to give certain customers access
to live streaming content.

I have an encoder and a W2K server running WMS 4.1. I also have a web
server. From this web server you log on to a page, and on this page
we are using an embedded Windows Media Player.

The WMP connects to the WMS server which in turn is pointed to the
encoder. The web server has address 192.16.0.1, the WMS server 192.168.0.2
and the encoder 192.168.0.3.

What I then want to do is for customers to log on to the website, go to
the page with the embedded player and gain access to the stream. All
without using an external IP for the encoder and WMS.

This all *used to work* - I have tried from a customer outside the
firewall - no problems. The web page accessed mms:/192.168.0.2
and on the WMS server it was pointed to msbd://192.168.0.3:7007

Anyone know why this is now suddenly not working?

I have been speaking to someone who claims that in order for this to work
your WMS server needs to have an external IP. However it has worked before
so I don't understand why it does not work now. Would appreciate any
suggestions.

Since it all used to work, something must have changed on the firewall or in
the IP setting(s) that the streaming server are bound to. Obviously someone
from the outside can't possibly directly connect to a non routable 192.168
IP number so how does your firewall deal with requests for mms or rtsp
traffic and what IP addresses are the streaming server bound to?

After doing some research it seems the firewall setup was different
before. I believe they used some sort of port forwarding and this is
why it worked before.

What I'm thinking now is to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and use
WM9. As I understand, with this I can get the server to initiate the
connection to the
Windows Media Player client, is this correct?
